DEMOCRACY AND EDUCATION
BY JOHN DEWEY
(1859-1952)


To day I am giving you a presentation on the book of Democracy and education. Which is written by John Dewey. He was American psychologist, philosopher educator social critic and political activist.

First of all John Dewey has explained main subjects;

EDUCATION AS A NECCESSITY OF LIFE:
John Dewey counts education as essential for life as oxygen. To highlight the importance of education, he has divided his subject in to three topics.

The 1st is,
RENEWAL OF LIFE BY TRASNMISSION:
Transmission means the process of renewal of life through action upon the environment. This topic elaborates the fact that besides reproduction, transfer of experiences on the main thing, which helps life go on in continuous sequence. This transmission means to inherit habits of dewing, thinking and feeling.

The 2nd Topic is,
EDUCATION AND COMMUNICATION:
Here John Dewey says that aim, beliefs, aspiration, knowledge, mutual understanding and such other things cannot be passed on physically from one to another. It requires communication.
Education plays important role in communication of there social behaviors. Such education does not require teaching and learning but the process of living together educates, on other hand necessity of teaching stimulates the process of communication.

3rd very important topic is,
THE PLACE OF FORMAL EDUCATION:
Formal education and training is vital
Here John Dewey takes formal education and training as a vital agent for the development of social groups. It trains an individual to take, part in the social activities efficiently. He learns how to deal with the social, economic and political matters of life. He is taught by a special group of persons at schools universities and other institutions.


In the Second chapter of his Book, John Dewey takes,
(EDUCATION AS A SOCIAL FUNCTION):
To elaborate his idea, he makes a discussion on the following topics.
The nature and meaning of environment.
The social environment
The social medium as education.
The school as a special environment.
Here John Dewey defines environment as social group which surround an individual and which consist of the conditions that promote or Linder, stimulates or inherit the characteristic activities of leaving being.

The Second Topic is, (SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT):
The social environment itself teaches man about secure habits, ideas and principles of life through co-ordination of the elders. The social environment consists that are the activities of fellow beings that are bound up to continue the activities if an individual.

The Third topic, (THE SOCIAL MEDIUM EDUCATION):
The social medium is truly educative in its effect in degree in which an individual shares or participates in conjoint activities. For making mutual understanding with the other, one needs medium/ that medium may be a language, direction and signals.

The Fourth Topic is, (THE SCHOOL AS A SPECIAL ENVIRONENT):
Here John Dewey has given a good solution of providing medium, environment and education at a time under one roof and that is the school.
The school promotes education environment its functions is to coordinate with in the disposition of each individual the diverse influences of the various social environment into which he enters.

CONCLUSION:
In the end, I conclude the whole thing is some points.

Education is essential for the continuity of life cycle.
Transmission and communication are the important means of renewal of life.
Education stimulates the process of transmission and communication.
Suitable medium activities education.
